1/25/24 - I shaved Goose! I still have to trim her tail a little bit, but for right now, she's looking great and almost ready for fair! This was my first time shaving my goat by myself, although my advisor helped with her legs. Her bracing job is doing well and we're only a little while away from being awesome at walking and bracing.
1/20/24 - Don't go outside without a jacket! It's cold! In fact, it was so cold I had to give Goose a shirt so she could stay warm. She looks a little goofy, but at least it's keeping her toasty. I even caught her snuggling with her friend Huntley. It was so cute. And guess what? The fair is so close! I can hardly wait!
1/6/24 - Happy New Year! The fair is in a month! I gave Goose another bath and I trimmed her hooves for the first time by myself. I'm planning on giving her a haircut sometime soon. Her bracing job is doing so much better and I'm so excited to see how we do at the show. We'll keep practicing though, don't want to get too far ahead of ourselves.
12/25/23 - Merry Christmas! I got Goose some Christmas presents. First, pine needles of course! Second, a blue ball that I gave to Rusty last year, but now it's Goose's. I'm not sure she likes it very much. I try to get her to play with it, but I think she's a little scared of it! She always enjoys the pine needles though!
11/28/23 - Goose is making so much progress. I think she's almost ready for fair! Like I said before, she does need a little more work with bracing, but I work with her at least 3 times a week, so she'll get there eventually. Hopefully before fair! She's been healthy since she had worms, so no problems there, but I still give her the dewormer pellets every once in a while just to be safe.
11/02/23 - Goose is doing very well! As we keep getting closer and closer to the show, I get even more excited than I already am! She's getting so much better with walking, she really only tugs a little bit. A little more work needs to be done with bracing, but it shouldn't be too difficult because her only problem is getting distracted too easily. She weighs 69 lbs currently, meaning she's gained 4 lbs in the past month.
10/23/23 - Wow! Super proud of Goose this week! I took her for a walk and decided to take her for a spin on the seesaw for the first time. I saw some other people in the goat barn doing it, so I wanted to see how Goose liked it. She actually did pretty well for her first time. I struggled to get the lead on, but once I did, she had a lot of fun. Pretty much every day, she jumps on the seesaw and runs up and down it. It's really fun to watch her learn how things work.
10/13/23 - I got Goose a new toy! I used it with Rusty last year, but so far, I think Goose really likes it. It's a ball that can be hung from the ceiling and can hold hay for the goats to eat from. I put hay in it, and other treats like pine needles. Goose really likes them! She gets so excited I almost have to fight her off the gate when she sees the pine needles. The best thing about pine needles is that they can also act as a natural dewormer for goats! With the pine needles in the ball, they can have fun knocking the ball around with their heads and jumping on the barrel to reach the needles.
10/7/23 - Yay! No more worms. We did have a little bit more diarrhea after giving the medicine, but I got some dewormer pellet treats and they went away pretty fast and we're back to normal. I was finally able to give her a bath, and I definitely got a bath too. Not only did I often have to press up against the wet goat to make sure she didn't fall, but my mom sprayed me with the hose multiple times. The funniest part, when I went to dry her off with towels, she would not stop screaming at me. So as a joke, I covered her face with a towel and that shut her up. And as soon as I took the towel off her face, she started screaming again. Silly Goose.
9/30/23 - Oh boy. This is a new one. Goose has worms! That means I have to give dewormer medication for 4 days and put an electrolyte supplement in the water to slow down the diarrhea, which is another problem. Yippee. First I cleaned out her pen because when I came to her the morning after I discovered it, the pen was a mess. Goose was too. I gave her an electrolyte supplement in the water and it turned the water blue and kind of looked like Gatorade. It must've tasted like Gatorade too because Goose absolutely loved it and drank a lot of it almost immediately. I tried to give her a bath, but it started thundering so I decided we better wait a little bit on that one. Hopefully it'll pass before Huntley gets it too.
9/23/23 - I think the best word to describe this week is "progress"! Before, she would always run away every time I tried to take a step closer. Now, I guess she figured out that I'm the one who brings the food, so she likes me! When I walk up to her, she takes a couple steps away, but eventually, she'll let me sit there and pet her. Something funny I discovered this week is that her pen mate, Huntley, absolutely loves getting scratches on the top of his head. Goose tolerates it. She let me do it for a little while, but after about 20 seconds, I guess she figured that was enough. Her walking isn't bad either. Definitely showing lots of progress.
9/15/23 - Since the day I got Goose, she's already done a lot better. I've walked her twice since then and I barely have to drag her. I still have to work on bonding though, because she doesn't like it when I'm standing next to her. Despite that, she let me sit and brush her for a good 3 seconds, but then ran away to the other side of the pen. I feed her and her pen mate 4 cups of sweet feed every day. I give a mixture of Timothy and Alfalfa hay. She weighs 65 pounds. I know it'll take some time, but hopefully in the next couple weeks, I can make some more progress with bonding. I want to be able to get to a point where she will just walk right up to me instead of me having to chase her around.
9/9/23 - I just got Goose! The moment I saw her, I knew that she was going to be a tough one to crack, but with a lot of hard work, we're going to accomplish great things. When I picked her out, I immediately started getting super excited just thinking about all the fun I was going to have with her this show season. Well, it may take a little longer than I expected. I pretty much had to drag her all the way to the goat barn, and she did not like that. When she got into the pen, she met her new pen mate, Huntley! Before I named her, my brother saw that Goose was running around like a maniac, so he said, "You're such a silly goose!" and so the name Goose was given. She doesn't like it when people touch her. Believe me, I've tried. On the other hand, Huntley loves to be pet and brushed. It had to be my goat. I can already tell that this year is going to be very interesting.
